Once you have selected your hearing aids after an evaluation, Carl will program them based on a variety of factors. These include a unique fitting algorithm that is optimized for your specific hearing loss, experience in fitting others with similar hearing loss, and most importantly feedback from the wearer regarding sounds and sound quality. You will also be given detailed information on using your device, insertion and taking out of your ear, changing batteries (if applicable), and care and cleaning. It is a good idea to bring a family member or close friend to the fitting as an extra set of eyes and ears can be helpful in remembering details. You will also be provided with detailed owners manuals as a reference in the future.
When wearing hearing aids for the first time you may experience different emotions about the sounds you are hearing. This is normal and to be expected. The goal of the hearing aid is to make everyday sounds clear and pleasant. Small changes can be made to the hearing aids during the first fitting if there are things you feel should be adjusted right away. It is important to remember that we are retraining your auditory system to hear sounds in a proper manner.
During your initial fitting and follow up appointments you will be asked several questions regarding the sound quality of your hearing aids. This is done to ensure that your hearing experience is optimized and that you are comfortable with your new hearing aids. Your hearing aid fitting is very much a starting point; other changes to customize the hearing aids to your liking may take place over the course of the next few follow up appointments.
Attitude is crucial to success with hearing instruments. Going into your fitting with a positive attitude greatly increases your likelihood of success. Keep in mind that it may take some time to get familiar with the new sounds that you had been missing. By communicating and working closely with your Hearing Specialist, you will be able to get the most out of your new hearing aids.
